New York state officials miscalculated the required distance between marijuana dispensaries and schools, resulting in over 100 dispensaries being ordered to shut down or relocate. The state's Office of Cannabis Management allowed these businesses to open, mistakenly believing that they were compliant with the law regarding their distance from schools. Governor Kathy Hochul expressed anger over the oversight and pledged to rectify it. City Council Member Gale Brewer argued for allowing existing dispensaries to remain open due to their contributions to community safety and employment.
The state's troubled Office of Cannabis Management said it ordered more than 100 pot shops to shut down or relocate after it misinterpreted a law saying how far away from schools they must be.
Gov. Kathy Hochul was said to be furious when the miscalculations were discovered. She said in a statement, in part, "We will correct this unacceptable oversight ... created by previous agency leadership...".
