Race to the Aras: Campaigning kicks off at Ploughing; Taoiseach insists McGregor White House visit not 'humiliating'
"Three candidates have been nominated by parties via the Oireachtas route - Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin"
"Roscommon, Longford, Cork City, Galway City and Dublin City councils yesterday opted not to nominate anyone"
"The presidential race has narrowed, with a number of local authorities deciding not to nominate any potential Independent candidates... and presidential candidates are pulling on their wellies, and hopefully leaving the white trousers at home, for a day at the Ploughing."
Three candidates — Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin — have secured nominations through the Oireachtas route. Several local authorities including Roscommon, Longford, Cork City, Galway City and Dublin City councils opted not to nominate any candidates. The refusals by those councils reduce the pool of potential Independent nominees and narrow the overall field. Presidential hopefuls are actively campaigning at the Ploughing Championships and engaging in local events. Campaign activity at the Ploughing includes informal appearances and efforts to connect with rural voters ahead of the election.
