"Catherine Connolly is holding a major lead in the presidential election with just 8 days to go, according to the latest Irish Times/Ipsos B&A opinion poll. The poll has Ms Connolly on 38pc, Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys on 20pc and Fianna Fáil's Jim Gavin, who has since stepped away from the campaign, at 5pc. The number of 'don't knows' is high at 18pc, the number of people who will not vote is at 12pc, and the number of people who plan to spoil their vote is at 6pc."

An Irish Times/Ipsos B&A opinion poll taken with eight days remaining shows Catherine Connolly on 38%, Heather Humphreys on 20% and Jim Gavin on 5%. 'Don't know' responses total 18%, planned non-voters are 12% and intended spoiled votes are 6%. Excluding those who are undecided, will not vote or intend to spoil their ballot gives Connolly 60%, Humphreys 32% and Gavin 8%. A substantial share of the electorate remains undecided or disengaged, and Jim Gavin has since stepped away from the campaign.
