US naval forces boarded and captured the Venezuelan-linked tanker Marinera near Iceland while it travelled between Iceland and Scotland. The operation was aided by British armed forces, including RAF surveillance. The vessel had previously been known as Bella-1 and appeared bound for a Russian Arctic port after apparently escaping a US naval blockade of Venezuela. Russia reported loss of contact, demanded humane treatment and swift return of the Russian crew, and said it had granted the Marinera a temporary permit to sail under the Russian flag. Russia invoked the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in protesting use of force. Ireland is closely monitoring the seized tanker in the vicinity of Irish waters.
