Audun Groenvold, a 49-year-old Olympic ski cross medalist, died after being struck by lightning while on a cabin trip. He won a bronze medal in ski cross at the 2010 Vancouver Games and had previously competed as an Alpine skier. Groenvold earned a bronze at the 2005 world championships and was the overall ski cross cup champion in 2007. Following his athletic career, he served as a national team coach and TV commentator. His death leaves a significant impact on Norway's skiing community.
"It is with great sadness that we have received the news of Audun Groenvold's untimely passing," the federation said. "The former national Alpine skier and ski cross athlete was recently struck by lightning during a cabin trip."
"Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure, who has meant so much to both the Alpine and freestyle communities," federation president Tove Moe Dyrhaug said, adding that his passing creates "a huge void."
