Britain has launched Nightfall, a rapid-development program for ground-launched ballistic missiles capable of carrying a 200kg warhead beyond 500km. Nightfall missiles will be mobile, launchable from various vehicles, able to fire multiple missiles in quick succession and withdraw within minutes to strike key military targets before an opponent can respond. Three industry teams will each receive 9m to design, develop and deliver three prototype missiles within 12 months for test firings. Ukraine currently fields ATACMS supplied by the US and the domestically developed Sapsan. Renewed Russian attacks on Kyiv have caused fires, left more than 1,000 apartment buildings without heating, and coincided with Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy facilities.
