Watch: Eamonn Coghlan posts emotional video as he greets Kate O'Connor after historic World Championships medal
"Yesterday I had a dream day and I genuinely enjoyed every single second of that competition and obviously was in second position afterwards. Then today I had a pretty solid long jump, but on the last jump, I really hurt my knee and I didn't know what was going happen in the javelin."
"I had my team around me that was filling me with positive thoughts, then I did one practice throw before that javelin competition and I was just going off pure vibes from them guys telling me that I can go out and do it. I'm just so happy that I was able to pull it together and then a PB in the 800m too."
"Congratulations, I'm so thrilled for you. You are a superstar and an inspiration to every child in Ireland. Well done,"
O'Connor produced five personal bests across the heptathlon and secured a World Championships medal. She became the first Irish woman to win a medal at a major championships in a multi-discipline event and only the sixth Irish athlete to medal at the World Championships, the first Irish Worlds medallist since Rob Heffernan in 2013. Eamonn Coghlan greeted O'Connor at the side of the track in Tokyo, calling her a superstar and an inspiration. O'Connor suffered a knee injury on her final long jump, relied on team encouragement, completed a practice javelin throw, and ran a PB in the 800m despite pain.
