"We have to admit that certain divisions of powers between the Bund and the Lander don't really match up when it comes to threats to internal security,"
"Every state is called upon to do its homework," he said. "Ultimately, drone defenses must be present everywhere."
German government ministers will meet Wednesday to coordinate defenses against drones after flights were suspended at Munich Airport twice due to reported drone sightings. CDU/CSU politicians are debating whether protecting key installations should fall to regional states (Lander) or the federal government (Bund). Steffen Bilger said current divisions of power do not match internal security threats and suggested the Bund could assume greater responsibility. Alexander Hoffmann said individual Lander are better placed to handle localized drone threats and urged every state to maintain drone defenses. Drone incidents have increased across Germany and Europe. Landespolizei generally handle drone threats, except airports and train stations, which fall under Bundespolizei. Police lack fighter jets or surface-to-air missile systems.
