Nell McCafferty, a legendary journalist from Derry, died aged 80 one year ago. Her sister Carmel says she feels "horrible" on the anniversary of Nell's death. Carmel says she has not had time to grieve. Carmel remembers Nell not as an important public figure but as a sister, a friend and an enemy. Carmel says she is unsure whether she ever knew the public version of Nell that others knew. Carmel describes a deep yearning that Nell had to be brought home to Derry. The remembrance emphasizes personal memory and unresolved grief.
"I haven't had time to grieve," she says.
"To me she wasn't this 'important' person, she was just Nell. I knew her as the sister, the friend and the enemy. I don't know if I ever got to know this Nell you all knew. At the back of it all I felt, 'She has to come home to Derry'."
