The Redlands Mall, once a bustling hub, has been empty for nearly 15 years following its closure in 2010. Despite promises from its corporate owners to keep it from becoming a blight on the city, it has instead languished, witnessing multiple ownership changes and failed revitalization proposals. In 2022, a redevelopment plan approved by the city aimed to transform the site into a mixed-use area with housing and retail, but stalled demolition plans have kept the fate of the mall in limbo, showcasing the challenges of urban redevelopment efforts.
In September 2010, General Growth Properties LLC decided to shutter the near-empty Redlands Mall and hand it off to a subsidiary, assuring residents it wouldn't be completely abandoned.
As one of the remaining store owners expressed, the corporate promises felt hollow: 'They said they're going to put a fence around it until the economy picks up... We're not a prison.'
After years of proposals, a new vision emerged in 2022 aimed at revitalizing the mall site into a mixed-use district with housing and retail.
Despite approval for redevelopment, the demolition plans for the abandoned mall have repeatedly stalled, leaving its future uncertain and the space underutilized.
