The Alum Rock Union School District board voted 4-1 to enter an exclusive negotiating agreement with SOMOS Mayfair and the School of Arts and Culture, representing the Si Se Puede Collective, for rebuilding the former MACSA youth center. The agreement gives the groups 540 days to assess financial, operational, and legal feasibility. The deal is not a ground lease or development approval; the district keeps property ownership and is not responsible for costs. Board President Linda Chavez voted no, citing insufficient current resources. Trustee Corina Herrera-Loera supported the effort, pointing to Jessica Paz-Cedillos’s fundraising of $30 million for La Placita. A fire in August 2025 destroyed MACSA shortly after support emerged to renovate it, and the building had been vacant for about a decade before the fire.
