Milpitas: Permanent Pickleball court location divides residents
Briefly

Milpitas City Council is withholding a decision on permanently installing pickleball courts at Hall Memorial and Gill Park following mixed opinions from residents. While many pickleball enthusiasts advocate for designated courts, nearby residents voice concerns over noise, traffic, and safety. A pilot program initiated in 2022 allowed temporary conversion of tennis courts for pickleball, attracting a vibrant community. Despite efforts by city staff to mitigate issues, including a time frame for court usage, unresolved problems led to a unanimous decision to further explore alternative locations before making a final choice.
We learned a lot, but I think now, getting the feedback and learning from the two years of pilot program, we still need to learn more how to meditate this issue.
Residents complained about constant pickleball noises and traffic congestion on their streets, going as far as sending a petition to the city last year to move the courts somewhere else.
If the courts are permanently enacted, staff will look into adding additional measures including sound dampening panels, painting new parking stalls away from the neighborhood and painting a red curb for emergency vehicle parking.
