Agrihood Sustainable Community near Santa Clara's upscale shopping centers was designed to provide low-income and homeless older adults a dignified living space with an 1.5-acre urban farm. However, less than two years after opening, residents face significant challenges, including health problems linked to poor living conditions, delayed repairs, and management issues. A fire incident caused by an e-bike battery exacerbated these problems, leading some residents, like Sammy, to experience severe respiratory issues, resulting in multiple trips to the hospital. Residents express frustration towards management, pointing to unmet commitments and increasing tensions.
"I thought I was going to die," Sammy said, while wheezing. "I couldn't walk two steps without feeling like I couldn't breathe. It was scary."
"It's smoke and mirrors," a resident who requested to use the name Sammy for privacy reasons told San José Spotlight.
