Rory McIlroy clashed with a fan during the final round of the US PGA after chanting from the gallery drew his ire. He struggled with heavy rough on the 16th, rebounded into a bunker, and parred the hole, but his overall challenge faded. After playing out the rough, he exchanged words with a fan who shouted USA. McIlroy was heard on the CBS broadcast telling the fan to shut up and pointing them out to security. He did not comment afterward, instead focusing on missed opportunities, including not birdieing two par-fives and making a bogey on the drivable par-four 13th. Aaron Rai won the tournament, and McIlroy finished tied for seventh, earning $637,050, while also retaining his Masters title.
"McIlroy had repeated run-ins with US fans during last year's Ryder Cup. His wife was hit by a beer thrown from the galleries at one point, while McIlroy was subjected to abuse from the gallery throughout the tournament. Sunday's incident was a minor blemish on what has been a successful spell for McIlroy."
