Android 17 is getting its own version of Apple's Handoff
Continue On is an Android feature that enables starting a task on a smartphone and continuing it on a compatible tablet. At launch, task transfer works only from phone to tablet, with bidirectional support planned later. Tablet users will see a Continue On icon in the dock that points to the most recently used phone app, provided the app is installed on the tablet. The feature can reopen documents, return users to the email they were viewing, or in some cases open the tablet browser to the best web page for continuing the task. Continue On will be testable in Android 17 RC1, with no confirmed timing for release or tablet-to-mobile handoffs.
"Continue On is designed to eventually be bidirectional, but Google says that at launch it will only support tasks moving from a smartphone to a tablet. Android tablet users will see the Continue On icon in the dock suggesting the most recently used app from their phone, assuming it's also installed on the tablet."
"It should allow Android users to directly open documents they were working on, or jump straight into the email they just had open. In some circumstances, it can open up the tablet's browser to the best page to continue a task on the web instead."
"Google says that Continue On will be available to test in Android 17's RC1 build, its first release candidate version, though hasn't yet detailed when that will arrive. It also didn't say when tablet-to-mobile handoffs will be supported."
