Jolla announces the new Jolla Phone with Sailfish OS 5 and a physical privacy switch
The Jolla Phone is an independent European Linux smartphone running Sailfish OS 5 and positioned as privacy-focused with no tracking, no calling home, and no hidden analytics. The device supports Android apps but allows full de-Googling. Hardware includes a MediaTek SoC, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage expandable via microSD, a 6.36" FullHD AMOLED display (390 ppi) protected by Gorilla Glass, a 50MP primary rear camera plus a 13MP ultrawide, and an unknown-resolution front camera. The phone features 5G, NFC, dual-SIM, side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a physical privacy switch, a user-replaceable 5,500 mAh battery, and replaceable back covers in three colors.
"It is called the Jolla Phone and is advertised by Jolla as an "independent European Do It Together (DIT) Linux phone." Jolla says the Jolla Phone is a "real Linux phone" because it runs "actual Linux" on the inside, "not a pseudo-Linux." But that's at the core. From the user's point of view, you get version 5 of the privacy-focused Sailfish OS, advertised as the "only European mobile operating system.""
"Talking about the specs and features, the Jolla Phone is powered by a "high performant" MediaTek SoC and has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, which is expandable via a microSD card. The Jolla Phone features a 6.36" FullHD AMOLED display, which has a 390 ppi pixel density and is protected by Gorilla Glass. The smartphone sports a 50MP primary camera on the rear, joined by a 13MP ultrawide camera. The resolution of the selfie camera on the front is unknown."
