Larry Magid: The disappearing off switch
Briefly

In childhood, devices featured straightforward on/off controls, such as switches and knobs, providing clear indications of their operational status. Items like TVs and radios relied on physical switches, making it obvious when they were on or off. In contrast, modern devices in 2025 utilize ambiguous push buttons that obscure whether they are powered on or off. This ambiguity extends to smartphones and computers, where proper shutdown procedures are necessary to prevent data corruption, showcasing how technology has become less user-friendly over time.
When I was a kid, nearly everything had a clear and simple way to turn it off. Switches flipped down to cut the power, and knobs clicked off when turned all the way to the left.
Fast forward to 2025. The same buttons that turn on my PC, phone, and TV also turn them off but rather than having an on and off position, they're just push buttons, and you can't tell if they're on or off by looking at them.
