O2 is shutting down its 3G network by the end of the year to enhance mobile service with 4G and 5G. Most customers will not face issues as they already use newer devices. However, this change raises concerns for older individuals who may still rely on 3G phones. Virgin Media O2 began deactivating 3G in various towns like Durham and Norwich earlier in the year. The company aims to support vulnerable customers through a partnership with Age UK to ensure they are not left without service.
'While we know that the vast majority of our customers already have a 4G or 5G handset and do not need to take any action, our priority has always been to support the minority who may be impacted.'
Virgin Media O2's 3G network was first launched 20 years ago, but has since become outdated.
O2 says that the 3G network currently carries less than two per cent of total network traffic.
The next town to have its network shut down will be Torquay in August, with the rest of the UK network being entirely withdrawn by the end of the year.
