Bob Dylan accepts honorary doctorate from Berklee - just in time for tribute show
"Thank you, Berklee College of Music, for bestowing on me this prestigious honor. What a pleasant surprise,"
"Who knows what path my career might have taken if I'd been fortunate enough to learn from some of the great musicians who taught at Berklee. It's something to think about."
"He's an artist who has never stopped evolving ... That's the spirit we try to cultivate here every day. Honoring him feels like a reaffirmation of the creative impulse that built this place."
"honors Dylan's immeasurable impact on popular culture with performances from students, faculty, alumni, and visiting artists that highlight his deep knowledge and nuanced appreciation of roots and Americana music,"
Bob Dylan, 84, accepted an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music in Boston, marking his first acceptance of an American honorary degree since 1970. He expressed gratitude, calling the honor a "pleasant surprise" and reflected on how studying at Berklee might have altered his career path. Berklee President Jim Lucchese praised Dylan as an artist who continues evolving and said honoring him reaffirms the institution's creative impulse. No special ceremony will accompany the degree. Berklee scheduled a roots-fueled tribute concert, "Watching the River Flow: A Roots Salute to Bob Dylan," on Nov. 5 featuring students, faculty, alumni, and visiting artists.
