Chappel Roan at Electric Picnic: What a treat to see this born performer in her natural habitat
Briefly

Chappell Roan delivered a packed Electric Picnic main-stage performance with a gothic, Edward Scissorhands-esque haunted-house set. She opened with Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl and wore a period-dress-inspired outfit, later revealing a bra, deep-purple high-waisted shorts, elbow-length gloves and knee-high red-laced boots. She performed Feminomenom, After Midnight and Naked in Manhattan, which roused the crowd and distinguished casual listeners from long-time fans. Her curly red hair and drag-influenced makeup amplified a camp aesthetic. Interaction with the audience was minimal, placing emphasis on the music. A new song, The Giver, leaned into country, which she adopted with ease.
American singer-songwriter Chappell Roan caused consternation when she came to Ireland last year with the Olympia theatre unable to accommodate the number of fans who wanted to see the star, who had just exploded in popularity. But capacity wasn't a problem on the main stage at Electric Picnic as seemingly every punter made their way there. Roan's stage was set.
The gothic, Edward Scissorhands-esque set looked as much like a haunted house as it did the main stage at the largest festival in Ireland. Roan, real name Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, who fans have been waiting to see all summer after getting snippets from festivals like Primavera and Reading and Leeds, burst onto the stage with Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl.
She's decked out in what looks to the naked eye like a period dress, with frilled cuffs and glitter aplenty. As the set progresses, she unveils a bra, a deep purple high waisted short combo, with elbow high gloves and knee-high, red-laced boots. In quick succession, we get Feminomenom, After Midnight and Naked in Manhattan. The latter gets the crowd roused as the last of the evening's light starts to disappear towards the west.
