New songs: Ed Askew ft Sharon Van Etten, Monolord, more
A daily roundup gathers newly released songs across genres. Ed Askew’s posthumous final album The Final Painting is scheduled for July 31 via Drag City, featuring contributions from multiple artists and backing vocals from Sharon Van Etten on the first single “Gray Air-o-Plane.” Lowertown’s upcoming album Ugly Duckling Union arrives this Friday, preceded by the advance single “Mice Protection,” described as the first song written for the record and created after touring, emotional turmoil, and a return to basement studio recording. The track is named as a homage to Avsha’s rat-infested house used for recording, and its lyrics introduce themes of moral ambiguity, perspective-dependent reality, and inner darkness and light. Monolord also shares another preview single, “It’s Neverending,” featuring Jørgen Sandstrøm, ahead of their album Neverending later this month.
"Ed Askew died back in January 2025 and his final, posthumous album has been announced: The Final Painting will be out July 31 via Drag City. The album features contributions from Eve Searls, Canaan Faulkner, Bill Callahan, William Tyler, and more, plus Sharon Van Etten who provides backing vocals on first single 'Gray Air-o-Plane.'"
"Lowertown's new album Ugly Duckling Union arrives this Friday, and ahead of that they've shared a final advance single, "Mice Protection." "The first song written for Ugly Duckling Union, the song starts with an exhale," they say. "After 2 years of extensive touring and emotional turmoil moving out of our childhoods houses in Atlanta, we had to reevaluate our relationship within music and the band. Mice protection was the first time back in a basement studio and the first time we realized we knew the direction for the new album.""
""We called the song 'Mice Protection' to pay homage to Avsha's rat infested house that all of Ugly Duckling Union was recorded in. Its lyrics are an introduction to some of the core themes of the album like the ambiguity of right and wrong, reality in the scope of different perspectives, and the darkness and light that exists and within an individual.""
"Monolord's new album Neverending is out later this month, and they've given us another preview with "It's Neverending," featu"
