Mavis Staples, at 86, prepares Sad and Beautiful World, released on 7 November, featuring covers of songs by Curtis Mayfield, Gillian Welch, Frank Ocean, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Porter Wagoner, plus material credited to Mark Sparklehorse Linkous and Kevin Morby. The album includes new songs, including one written for and about Staples by Hozier and Allison Russell. Collaborators include Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), MJ Lenderman, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy and Derek Trucks. Staples first rose to prominence in the mid-1950s with the Staple Singers and has since released solo albums and worked with major artists such as Prince, Aretha Franklin, David Byrne and Bob Dylan, returning to recording after personal hiatuses and producing several acclaimed recent records with Jeff Tweedy.
