
Rob Base, born Robert Ginyard in May 1967, died at age 59 after a battle with cancer. He was best known as one half of the hip-hop duo Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, with whom he formed a lifelong partnership after meeting in fifth grade in Harlem. Their 1988 breakout single “It Takes Two” peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard U.S. dance club songs chart and became a defining rap underground hit. The duo later released “Joy and Pain” and “Get On the Dance Floor,” and Base issued the solo album “The Incredible Base” in 1989. He supported rap’s nuance and creativity, and he is survived by two children; his wife April died in 2013.
