"was one of the first to feature the 'New York Sound' that sparked a renewed interest in Latin music during the 1970s."
"The inspiration of so many of these great musicians who left their mark on this earth will never die as long as there are talented young people like those here, keeping the music, salsa, and all Caribbean rhythms alive."
Willie Colón died Saturday at age 75, passing peacefully surrounded by family. He was born in the South Bronx in 1950 to Puerto Rican parents and recorded his debut album El Malo at age 16 in 1967. El Malo helped define the New York Sound and renewed interest in Latin music during the 1970s, while launching Héctor Lavoe's career. Colón collaborated with Celia Cruz, Soledad Bravo, Ismael Miranda, Rubén Blades, and played on David Byrne's Rei Momo. He also acted and co-created the soundtrack for 1982's Vigilante. Contemporary artists publicly paid tribute and the family requested privacy.
