'Sound of Music' hits the stage in Saratoga
"Lauren D'Ambrosio plays Maria in South Bay Musical Theatre's production, and Brad Satterwhite plays Captain von Trapp. For the film version, Doris Day was seriously considered for the role of Maria along with Leslie Caron, Ann Bancroft and Grace Kelly, before Julie Andrews landed the role. Walter Matthau was actually tested for the role of Captain von Trapp, with other names like Yul Brynner and Bing Crosby also floated for the part before Christopher Plummer, who famously hated the movie, was cast."
"The show portrays seven von Trapp children, but the real family had 10 children. In SBMT's production, Liesl von Trapp is played by Coraline Christian, while the six younger children are double-cast. Tickets for "The Sound of Music" are $27-$59, at SouthBayMT.com or 408-266-4734. Saw the Beach Boys last month at the Mountain Winery. What a beautiful setting. Still to come: Abba, the Concert Tribute, Sept. 22; America Sept. 28. And more to come through October. www.mountainwinery.com"
"The annual family-friendly Sacred Heart Carnival is Friday Sept. 12, and Saturday, Sept. 13, 5-10:30 p.m. both evenings. What would a carnival be without corn dogs, cotton candy, rides and bingo? And for those over 21, there will be a cantina to quench your thirst. A variety of entertainment is planned, from the Los Gatos Ballet to Hula Halau O Kanela Noeau. Sacred Heart Parish is located at 13718 Saratoga Ave."
South Bay Musical Theatre is presenting The Sound of Music Sept. 27–Oct. 18 at the Saratoga Civic Theater. The stage production portrays seven von Trapp children while the real family had ten; Liesl is played by Coraline Christian and the six younger children are double-cast. Tickets range $27–$59 at SouthBayMT.com or 408-266-4734. Local events include Mountain Winery concerts and the Sacred Heart Carnival, and a documentary "September 5" examines broadcasting at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
