Brooklyn Pride Celebrates 30 Years of Parades
""There were a lot of great relationships between people from Queens and Brooklyn. And then, after Queens started, Brooklyn felt it was time to have our own.""
""Heller, an attorney and Bronx native who has spent several decades living in Brooklyn, first became involved with Brooklyn Pride in 2007 and 2008 when he was asked to drive former Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz's parade float.""
Brooklyn Pride was founded in 1997 after local residents, including Jerry Allred and Sonia Galarza, recognized the need for a Pride event in Brooklyn. The first parade and multicultural festival took place on June 14, 1997, starting at 3rd Street and 5th Avenue and ending at Prospect Park. Mickey Heller, co-chair of Brooklyn Pride, noted the strong relationships between Brooklyn and Queens, which inspired Brooklyn to establish its own Pride celebration. Heller has been involved with Brooklyn Pride since 2007 and became co-chair in 2012.
