Elected leaders partner to host Juneteenth Jubilee

Coney Island will host the third annual Juneteenth Jubilee, sponsored by local and state officials including Hakeem Jeffries and Jessica Scarcella-Spanton. Scheduled for June 19, the celebration will take place at Nautilus Playground and will run from noon to 4 p.m. The event commemorates Juneteenth, recognizing the moment in 1865 when the Union army announced freedom for slaves in Galveston, Texas. It also highlights the significance of Juneteenth as both a New York state holiday and a federal holiday, reflecting its growing importance in American culture.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, Assemblymember Alec Brook-Krasny and City Councilmember Justin Brannan teamed up to sponsor the third annual Juneteenth Jubilee.
Juneteenth, which is also called Emancipation Day, marks the Union army's June 19, 1865, announcement in Galveston, Texas, that all slaves are free.
The festivities will include activities, performances, food, games and more, providing a vibrant community celebration for attendees.
Juneteenth became a New York state holiday on June 17, 2020, and a federal holiday in 2021 when former President Joe Biden signed the commemoration into law.
