Olympic silver medallist Gus Kenworthy, who previously retired in 2022, has announced his comeback aiming for the 2026 Olympics in Italy. The openly gay skier initially announced his retirement after a disappointing performance in Beijing. Reflecting on his previous decision, Kenworthy expressed a longing for competition and a desire to make his final Olympic performance count. He has engaged in various projects post-retirement, including launching an LGBTQ+ book club and pursuing creative ventures. He plans to represent the UK in the upcoming games, after previously competing for the USA.
After taking a step away, I realized I miss skiing and I really want to compete again. I didn't know if I would be able to come back after three-and-a-half years, but I knew I wouldn't be able to after seven and a half.
My whole goal in China was to land the run I had been training as best as I could, and I didn't do that. I had already announced that it was going to be my last contest.
