Drag queen Kochina Rude, during a party, encountered an unresponsive individual due to drug overdose and successfully used naloxone to reverse it. Realizing a gap in overdose education within her community, Rude, an adjunct trainer with the SF Drug Overdose Prevention and Education Project, began distributing naloxone at her shows. Rude innovatively blended education and entertainment, demonstrating how to use naloxone to audiences of up to 500 while maintaining a lively atmosphere. She emphasizes clarity, simplicity, and engagement in her presentations to effectively communicate vital information on drug safety.
I realized that my community was not getting the information they needed about how to reverse an overdose, Rude tells The Advocate.
...I was in a unique position to engage queer audiences about practicing safer drug use.
Rude was able to craft a show that's not only life-saving but also entertaining.
Part of the trick is to treat the audience like a kindergarten class...keeping information simple, avoiding big words, using call-and-response.
