In his recent Sicilian road trip, Gethin Morgan highlights the island's lesser-known attractions that are often overlooked by tourists. Renting a car proved essential for exploring scenic routes from coasts to mountains. He emphasizes the breathtaking beauty of Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro, a nature reserve known for its stunning waters and peaceful coves, which remain less crowded due to its remote location. Morgan's experience suggests that the depth of Sicily's charm is best appreciated off the beaten path, accessible mainly by car.
Essentially it's a coastal path, with one car park on the south side and another on the north. The trail winds along the coast for around 7km.
I recently spent two weeks driving around the island in a relatively neat loop, having rented a rather adorable Fiat Pandino to do so.
Has the colour of water ever made you audibly groan? I don't think I've ever been as infatuated by the oasis-like vision of calm ocean waters as I was throughout my day exploring Zingaro.
It's much more interesting to dive into the lesser-known treasures that await in every corner of this epic isle.
