Marcus Samuelsson opened his first restaurant in D.C., named Marcus DC, within the Morrow Hotel in NoMa on June 3. Overseeing every detail, Samuelsson aimed to create a vibrant dining experience inspired by Ethiopian and Swedish culinary traditions. Collaborating with local Maryland chef Anthony Jones, the menu features flavors representative of D.C., such as mambo sauce and crab dishes that evoke nostalgic summer memories. Samuelsson emphasized making the restaurant personal and unique, ensuring guests leave with a memorable experience they wish to revisit.
This is the first restaurant that we are doing on our terms. We just wanted to connect, to keep the guests curious...and make them feel like 'Wow, this is an experience that I want to come back to.'
Every summer we would stop by and get a few bushels of crabs from Mel's Truck...That was just like a fun summertime experience for me and now I've taken that and mixed it with rice.
