NYC compost update: City releases new bin size
Briefly

The New York City Department of Sanitation will release a new 13-gallon compost bin priced at $38.50, aimed at improving composting convenience for residents with less compostable waste. Recent data shows that New Yorkers diverted 5.4 million pounds of material from landfills in just one week, highlighting the program's success. The city plans to give away over 5 million pounds of compost at multiple locations, reflecting the increased community engagement in composting efforts. This initiative supports environmentally-friendly practices and boosts local sustainability efforts.
As we divert more and more material away from landfill to beneficial use, we are making the program even more convenient with the option of a smaller bin for households that produce less material.
These numbers show that New Yorkers want to compost, and they will do so when offered a simple, free, weekly service.
From May 18 through May 24, city residents diverted 5.4 million pounds of compostable material from landfills, marking at least the fourth time in the past eight weeks where the amount collected broke the previous all-time record.
Sanitation said that as a result of the success, it is slated to give out more than 5 million pounds of compost at giveback events this year.
