The History of Macy's 4th of July Fireworks
Briefly

Thousands gather in New York City for Macy's annual fireworks show every July 4th. The tradition started in 1976 after Macy’s original fireworks show in 1958 celebrated the store's anniversary. This year marks the 49th show at Brooklyn Bridge and Lower East River, featuring 80,000 shells with 30 colors and projection mapping. Preparation takes twelve days and involves expert pyrotechnicians. The fireworks will stream live on Peacock and NBC, starting at 9:25pm ET.
Macy's first-ever fireworks show was a celebration of Macy's 100th Anniversary, rather than America's birthday. Over the Hudson River, a million people watched the store's first-ever large-scale pyrotechnics show.
This year, Macy's 49th fireworks show will shoot off from the Brooklyn Bridge and four surrounding barges in the Lower East River, featuring 80,000 shells and 30 vibrant colors.
The onboard preparation of shells and firing mortars takes up to 12 days and involves dozens of pyrotechnicians who hand-load the shells into the mortars.
The show will be streamed live on Peacock and NBC, with an official start time for the fireworks set at 9:25pm ET.
