Before Broadway, Natalie Venetia Belcon Was Sweating It Out In Dance Class With J.Lo
Briefly

Natalie Venetia Belcon, nominated for her role as legendary Cuban singer Omara Portuondo in the Broadway musical Buena Vista Social Club, initially struggled with singing in Spanish. Despite her early familiarity with the ensemble's music, she had misrecited the lyrics. Now, she performs the show in flawless Spanish, impressing audiences and leading to her first Tony nomination. Notably, the real Omara Portuondo attended a performance, greatly moving Belcon and the audience during a special curtain call introduction.
She's since remedied that, of course, and now, eight times a week, Belcon belts out the numbers in flawless Spanish (the spoken parts of the show are in English).
