Daryl Hall says yacht rock is a "fucking joke" coined by "two jerk offs"
Briefly

Daryl Hall recently expressed his confusion and irritation toward the term 'yacht rock' on the Broken Record podcast, arguing it inaccurately classifies his music and stems from a joke in California. He finds it perplexing that a broadly defined and superficial genre arose from the amalgamation of R&B and jazz influences. Hall emphasizes his discomfort with being categorized into any musical genre, stating these labels misrepresent the essence of his work. The discussion includes reflections from other musicians like Kenny Loggins, highlighting ongoing debates about the genre's relevance and definition.
This is something I don't understand. First of all, yacht rock was a fucking joke by two jerk offs in California and suddenly it became a genre.
People misjudged us because they couldn't label us. They always came up with all this kind of crap, soft rock and yacht rock and all this other nonsense.
It's just R&B with maybe some jazz in there. It's mellow R&B. It's smooth R&B. I don't see what the yacht part is.
Where the hell did we invent that thing that became called yacht rock? Some of those are not great songs, but they have that smooth pop thing that became very popular for a period of time.
