'I Had No Clue What I Was Doing'
Briefly

David Foster, known for his work with musical legends, faced the challenge of composing for 'Boop! The Musical', inspired by 1930s Betty Boop cartoons. After extensive research into the original cartoons and their unique music style, Foster transformed his approach by learning from Broadway veterans. He wrote around 50 songs for the production, ultimately including 20 in its final version. By drawing on his father's barroom piano skills and his own childhood influences, Foster created a bizarrely entertaining musical, showcasing his growth as a composer.
My father was an amateur pianist. It wasn't his job. He just enjoyed playing. His specialty was the standards of the '30s and '40s and stride.
The cartoons were perplexing to me because the music they used is so far beyond what I would relate to. I loved it. I just didn’t have any idea how to make that kind of music.
