Hank Azaria marked his 60th birthday with a theme party in New York, inviting friends from high school, college, and the industry to dress as their favorite rock stars. Guests were told they would be entertained by a Bruce Springsteen cover band, but Azaria was the front man and his band had prepared a full 90-minute set. The event became a continuing project, leading to ongoing performances. Other celebrities have also spearheaded cover bands, including Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy’s R.E.M. tribute unit, Maya Rudolph’s Prince cover band, and Rainn Wilson’s efforts to support a Guided by Voices-related indie rock band. These groups vary in scale but share enthusiasm for their musical heroes and aim to bring that appreciation to broader audiences.
"While the scale of each band differs - Shannon and Narducy will go on tour for weeks at a time and sell out 1,000-capacity venues, for example - they're all united in the pure, unbridled enthusiasm they have for their musical heroes and want to communicate that love to the masses."
