These New Yorkers Are Touching Grass
Briefly

This Sunday, a group of New Yorkers attended a plant and history tour at Tompkins Square Park, led by Olivia Rose. The artist started her plant design studio in 2017 and began organizing free walking tours to connect city dwellers with their local plant life. Attendees from various creative backgrounds joined the tour, eager to learn about the trees and the history they bear. The highlight was the Hare Krishna Tree, symbolizing the spiritual roots of the area and the stories encapsulated in its existence.
With her hand pressed to the Hare Krishna Tree's trunk, she explained that it was a rare example of a mature American elm in New York City, planted around 1879.
Ms. Rose hopes her walks will foster a more intimate relationship between New Yorkers and the overlooked vegetation that lives alongside them.
