Immigrants unlawfully held on Rikers Island due to federal immigration requests now have until August 15, 2025, to claim part of a $92.5 million settlement from the class action lawsuit Onadia v. The City of New York. This settlement stems from detainees held beyond their release dates between 1997 and 2012. Legal representatives believe around 20,000 individuals may qualify for payouts, although tracking them has been challenging due to many being deported. The application deadline extension coincides with renewed efforts by the city to allow ICE investigations on Rikers Island.
The extension for claims means former detainees now have until August 15, 2025, to apply for a share of a $92.5 million settlement.
Debra Greenberger commented on the challenges of locating claimants, noting many potential recipients have been deported due to unlawful detentions.
