Alaa al-Najjar, a Palestinian paediatrician, was evacuated from Gaza to Italy after an Israeli airstrike killed her husband and nine children. Alongside her badly wounded son, Adam, she is being transported to Eilat for a flight to Milan, arranged by the Italian government. Alaa's family home was bombed on May 23, resulting in unspeakable loss. Despite being hailed as strong, she expressed her desire to grieve without the pressure of heroism, reflecting on the tragedy with a sense of bewilderment about its purpose.
I am not strong. Everyone says I am, they call me a hero because I keep going, but I want the right not to be strong.
If God allowed this tragedy, there must be a reason. There has to be. But I don't know what it is.
