Long Island teen, mom credited with saving neighbor from house fire
"I heard the sound of the fire. Like, I heard the sound of the cracking of the house and stuff like that, and then I turned and looked and I seen it. The flames coming out of the side of the house."
"I kept banging on the windows. I'm banging on the door. I'm ringing the doorbell. [I yelled,] 'Your house is on fire. Your house is on fire.' And she's not hearing me."
"A lot of people calling me a hero. I was like, I'm not really a hero. I'm just being a good neighbor."
"Be aware of everything around you. Anything can happen."
Jovani Moss, a ninth grader, noticed a house fire while waiting for the school bus and called his mother for help. His mother, Natechia Campbel-Moss, rushed to wake their neighbor, banging on windows and doors. After kicking the door down, she rescued the unaware neighbor from the flames. Jovani is being praised at school for his actions, though he humbly states he was just being a good neighbor. The homeowner expressed gratitude for their assistance despite the significant damage to her home.
