"Planning a loved one's funeral can be among the most difficult and vulnerable times in a person's life. Naughton heartlessly took advantage of New Yorkers while knowingly operating his funeral home without a license and failed to take proper care of the remains in his possession."
"The violations and alleged crimes uncovered at Camelot Funeral Home demonstrate why only licensed funeral directors should be entrusted with the care of human remains."
Michael Naughton operated the Camelot funeral home in Mount Vernon without a license, defrauding families and mishandling remains. An inspection revealed 13 decomposing bodies and 17 boxes of cremated remains improperly stored. State officials issued an emergency order to shut down the facility and demanded cooperation from Naughton. The investigation indicated that he had been conducting funeral services and managing remains since at least May 2025, despite his license being revoked seven years prior. The case underscores the importance of licensed funeral directors in handling human remains.
