Frustrated by locked playgrounds amid a lack of open space for families, Brewer is spearheading a proposal that is part of a larger city council initiative to enhance recreational access. The city estimates it would cost $49 million annually to implement extended playground hours, and Mayor Eric Adams supports these changes, anticipating benefits for thousands of residents.
"We need to get people off the street," she said. "We need people to be exercising and we need people to do it conveniently. "It is so frustrating for me to walk by and see this locked half-a-block-big space with nobody in it all summer. "
