State Sen. Zellnor Myrie held a press conference advocating for the extension of a pilot program providing free extended daycare hours for NYC preschoolers. The program allows parents to drop off children at 7 a.m. and pick up at 5 p.m. However, Diki Daycare, one of the participating centers, announced the pilot's end in June. Myrie criticized Mayor Eric Adams' proposed budget as insufficient, emphasizing the pilot's importance for working parents and urging for its restoration in the FY 2026 budget.
Diki Daycare said it was recently informed that the pilot program will be ending in June.
Myrie accused the Adams Administration of being "irresponsible" by cutting the program, stating that working parents need access to free childcare until after 5 p.m.
