Every public school in New York City is required to have a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) where parents and guardians can advocate for students. Membership is automatic upon enrolling a child and is free of charge. Parents can attend meetings in person or remotely and have access to meeting summaries and recordings. PTAs serve as a point of connection between families and school staff while allowing parents to influence school decisions, including budget allocations. Participation is an opportunity for parents to empower themselves in school governance.
PTAs are groups where parents and guardians come together to advocate for students and stay informed about school developments. They also serve as bridges between families and school staff.
Parents and legal guardians are automatically members of a PTA and can participate in meetings as little or as much as they want. It doesn't cost anything to join.
Participating in a PTA is a way that all parents can get involved with school decisions, such as how the school's budget is spent.
'It is basically the way that parents can empower themselves in the decision-making at the school,' said Antonia Martinelli, coordinator at PTA Link.
