Transit advocates, particularly in the Riders Alliance, are pressing for improvements to the B41 bus route along Flatbush Avenue, a crucial commuter artery for Brooklyn. The bus routes face severe delays due to traffic, moving at as little as four miles per hour. Despite previous proposals for dedicated bus lanes, implementation has been slow, raising concerns among public advocates regarding timely transport solutions. The Streets Plan law, enacted in 2022, mandates the mayor to create 150 miles of bus lanes, highlighting the need for urgent action in response to community demands.
The improvements that we're looking to do on Flatbush Avenue is to redesign the street in a way that's going to prioritize buses," said Riders Alliance senior organizer Jolyse Race.
It came into effect in 2022 and it mandates that the mayor put in 150 miles of bus lanes and busways throughout his administration.
