The Carlsbad City Council is reevaluating its proclamation policy following a controversy surrounding the recent Women's History Month recognition. The council's existing policy prohibits political and religious proclamations but did not account for the recipient's affiliations. This led to public outcry when a member of the Republican Women's club accepted the proclamation. Mayor Blackburn proposed limiting proclamations to two specific events to mitigate division within the community. Some residents criticized current practices as fostering favoritism and failing to represent diverse contributions from all residents.
Proclamations should reflect the diversity, contributions, and values of our entire city, not serve as a vehicle for political branding.
Mayor Keith Blackburn suggested that the council stop issuing proclamations altogether except for two: Arbor Week and Pride Month.
