At an Older Americans Month celebration on May 20, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, along with Community Board 18 and various nonprofit organizations, raised awareness about scams, fraud, and elder abuse affecting seniors. This marks the third consecutive year for this initiative, aimed at informing and supporting older adults. Gonzalez, recalling his personal experiences with seniors in his community, stressed the importance of communication and safety, urging victims of crime to seek help and highlighting the sophisticated nature of modern scams that target vulnerable populations.
Gonzalez emphasizes, 'If somebody is physically abusive to you, you need to get help... If someone is stealing from you and hurting you, you need to let us know so we can help you.'
He spoke about the growing number of scams targeting older adults and told the members that they all had a role to play; he was deputizing each of them to get the information out about how to keep each other safe.
Gonzalez stated that seniors should not feel ashamed if they fall for a scam because scammers are getting more sophisticated, which is why it is important to reach out to his office.
The DA underscored the importance of collaboration, 'Beyond information, it's also the District Attorney working with stakeholders, making sure that we keep all of you safe.'
