Cuomo is 'landlords' favorite candidate,' lefty NYC mayoral hopefuls and tenants say, slamming ex-gov's housing record
Briefly

Andrew Cuomo's candidacy for NYC mayor is being challenged by left-wing opponents who criticize his housing record as detrimental to tenants. Advocates rally outside City Hall, highlighting a 33% rent increase and a 50% rise in homelessness during his governorship. They argue he extended loopholes in rent laws that led to the loss of rent control status for many apartments. Critics like city Comptroller Brad Lander and Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani condemn his ties to real estate donors, branding him as a candidate more interested in personal gain than housing justice.
"We're here today because your landlord's favorite mayoral candidate is once again trying to position himself as a leader of our city," said Joanne Grell, co-chair of the Freeze the Rent campaign.
"Unfortunately, Andrew Cuomo cannot give a rats ass about the lives or future or housing justice for every single New Yorker - he is a corrupt ego maniac who shows time and time again that he cares about only one thing and that is Andrew Cuomo," said city Comptroller Brad Lander.
"We are here to speak about the record of disgrace former governor Andrew Cuomo, a governor who has accepted more than two million dollars from real estate over the course of this very short run," Mamdani said.
The NYS Tenant Bloc stated that under Cuomo's tenure, rents increased 33% in the state while homelessness skyrocketed 50% in the city.
