In Mayor Eric Adams' executive budget proposal, he emphasized substantial increases in funding for New York City's public education, allocating $18.3 billion to the Education Department. This budget marks a $670 million rise from the previous fiscal year and a total increase of $4.7 billion since 2019. Key initiatives include continuing early childhood education funding and enhancing after-school programs. While the City Council has requested additional funding, they recognized this budget proposal as an important initial step in the ongoing budget negotiation process that concludes in June.
"No one will feel the impact more than our students because this is the best budget ever for families and young people," Mayor Adams stated during his budget speech.
"This is how the budget process should work, but it's disappointing that it took three years for this administration to become tired of being entirely on the wrong side of doing right by New Yorkers," Council Speaker Adrienne Adams expressed.
